Hand Puppet Puppies
Larger Hand Puppets measures app 12 inches (30 cm), Smaller Puppet measures app. 7"/18 cm.

Materiels:

  Yarn:

Tan Puppy: Lion Brand HomeSpun - app. 45 yards (40 m).
Off White Puppy: Lion Brand HomeSpun - app 20 yards (18 m).
White Puppies: Baby Clouds, app. 50 yards (43 m) of MC (white) and 15 yards (10 m) of CC (pink).
Few yards of heavy black yarn for eyes and noses.

  Needles: US size 10 1/2, (size 6 mm).
  Odds ans Ends: Large yarn needle.
Spare knitting needle or yarn holder.

  Gauge: Red Heart - 2 1/2 sts per inch (1 st per cm)
Lion Brand - 3 sts per inch (3 sts per 2.5 cm).

General Note:
  The Puppies are made in 5 pieces as seen in illustration.

The stitch for body and ears are seed (abbrevated seed). There is no difference between right and wrong side for body and ears.

The insert is knit in stockinet (abbreviated St st).

The finishing is worked with over-cast sts (no seam).

  SEED: Uneven stitch count:

Puppet ONE
  BODY:
    CO 26 sts.
Seed until work measures 6 inches (15 cm).
Next row: Work 13 sts of seed, save to spare needle or yarn holder.

Upper half of puppet:

   
Continue with next 13 sts, complete row; at end SCO 1 st (14 sts).
Work next row as established, at end SCO 1 st (15 sts).
Work 4 rows of seed.

Work next 2 rows as follows: (decrease sequence):
Slip 1st st, work next, slip 1st st over 2nd, complete row.
Repeat.
Work 2 rows of seed.

Repeat last 4 rows until 7 sts on ndl.
Work decrease sequence (5 sts).
Bind off on next row.

    Lower half of puppet:
   
Pick up saved sts and work 1 row.
Repeat as for upper half of puppet (marked in green).
  INSERT:
    CO 5 sts.
Work 3 rows of St st, starting with P.
Next row, increase row: K1, Kinc, K to last 2 sts, Kinc, K1.
Work 3 rows of St st.
Repeat last 4 rows until there are 13 sts on ndl.

Work 5 rows of St st.
Next row, decrease row: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Work 3 rows of St st.
Repeat last 4 rows until there are 7 sts on ndl.
Repeat decrease row (5 sts).
Bind of on next row.

  FINISHING BODY with INSERT:
  Sew up side of body until work was split.

Fold insert in half and pin center and tops as illustrated on both insert and body. Fold upper tip slightly over insert.

Use MC yarn tails to sew insert into work while easing the body part to insert.

Embroider eyes and nose with backstitches, see ears.

Run all other tails into work.

  EARS:
  CO 11 sts.
Work seed until work measures 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm) or as long as you like.
Cut yarn and thread tail through the sts.
Draw up tight to gather work. Stitch through sts again to secure gathering.

Secure tail from start into work.

Sew ears onto work as illustrated.

Puppet TWO (fits toddler hand++)
  BODY:
    CO 17 sts.
Seed until work measures 31/2 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm).
Next row: Work 9 sts of seed, save to spare needle or yarn holder.

Upper half of puppet:

   
Continue with next 8 sts, complete row; at end SCO 1 st (9 sts).
Work next row as established, at end SCO 1 st (10 sts).
Work 4 rows of seed.

Work next 2 rows as follows: (decrease sequence):
Slip 1st st, work next, slip 1st st over 2nd, complete row.
Repeat.
Work 2 rows of seed.

Repeat last 4 rows until 7 sts on ndl.
Work decrease sequence (5 sts).
Bind off on next row.

    Lower half of puppet:
   
Pick up saved sts and work 1 row.
Repeat as for upper half of puppet (marked in green).
  INSERT:
    CO 4 sts.

Work 3 rows of St st, starting with P.
Next row, increase row: K1, Kinc, K to last 2 sts, Kinc, K1.

Repeat last 4 rows until there are 10 sts on ndl.

Work 3 rows of St st.
Next row, decrease row: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Work 3 rows of St st.
Repeat last 4 rows until there are 4 sts on ndl.
Repeat decrease row (5 sts).
Bind of on next row.

  FINISH as described above.
  EARS:
    CO 7 sts.
Work seed until work measures 3 to 3-1/2 inches (7 to 9 cm) or as long as you like.
Cut yarn and thread tail through the sts.
Draw up tight to gather work. Stitch through sts again to secure gathering.

Secure tail from start into work.

Sew ears onto work as illustrated above under puppet ONE.

Puppet THREE
  BODY:
    CO 32 sts.
Seed until work measures 3-1/2 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm).
Next row: Work 16 sts of seed, save to spare needle or yarn holder.
Upper half of puppet:
   
Continue with next 16 sts, complete row; at end SCO 1 st (17 sts).
Work next row as established, at end SCO 1 st (18 sts).
Work 12 rows of seed.

Work next 2 rows as follows: (decrease sequence):
Slip 1st st, work next, slip 1st st over 2nd, complete row.
Repeat.

Repeat last 2 rows until 8 sts on ndl.
Work decrease sequence (6 sts).
Bind off on next row.

    Lower half of puppet:
   
Pick up saved sts and work 1 row.
Repeat as for upper half of puppet (marked in green).
  INSERT:
    CO 6 sts.

Work 1 P row.
Next row, increase row: K1, Kinc, K to last 2 sts, Kinc, K1.

Puppet FOUR (fits hand of 6-8 year old)
  BODY:

Seed until work measures 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm).
Next row: Work 11 sts of seed, save to spare needle or yarn holder.
Upper half of puppet:
   
Continue with next 11 sts, complete row; at end SCO 1 st (12 sts).
Work next row as established, at end SCO 1 st (13 sts).
Work 4 rows of seed.

Work next 2 rows as follows: (decrease sequence):
Slip 1st st, work next, slip 1st st over 2nd, complete row.
Repeat.

Repeat last 2 rows until 8 sts on ndl.
Work decrease sequence (5 sts).
HINT: You may consider continuing with insert here instead of binding off, e.g. work next row while decreasing by one stitch, then start insert as described below.
Bind off on next row.

    Lower half of puppet:

Work 1 P row.
