Subject: Patterns Set 2 Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 10:35:18 -0400 From: Knitting Patterns Forum To: "Knitting Patterns Forum" KNITTED PIN MATERIALS #2 knitting needles Yarn needle Medium weight yarn scraps in 2 colors. Yarn A - approx. 5 yards (nubby, boucle, chenille, mohair, etc.) Yarn B - approx. 3 1/3 yards (contrasting color, matching color, variegated, etc.) Craft store porcelain face profile (small size for a pin - slanted neck) Pin back Glue 1 pretty bead Sewing needle and thread to match yarn. HAT Yarn A - cast on 14 stitches. K1, P1 rib for 8 rows. Cut yarn A, leaving end to work in later. With yarn B, stockinette stitch 8 rows. (K 1 row, P 1 row) 9th row of yarn B - (K 2 tog.) repeat ( ) to end. Cut yarn B leaving longish tail. Using yarn needle, draw tail through the 7 stitches remaining on the needle. Craw up tightly and sew the seam in color B. Using the color A tail, finish sewing up the seam in the lower portion of the hat. SCARF Using yarn A - cast on 30 stitches. Garter stitch 5 rows. (K every row) Bind off leaving a bit of a tail to be used in assembly. ASSEMBLY Roll up the brim on the hat. Use a small amount a glue to affix the hat on the head. Slant the hat at a fashionable angle. Glue the scarf around the neck, wrapping as you would your own winter muffler. Use the yarn tail on the scarf to secure the scarf to the hat at the back of the pin. When the glue is dry, sew the pin back to the brim area of the hat. On the front of the pin, at the point where the scarf ends cross, I usually sew a pretty bead or make a French knot for decoration. VARIATIONS: The Santa Clause heads are cute in red stocking caps with white brims. I let the long end of the cap fall to the side of the face. Then I add a white collar around his neck. The dog and cat heads are cute with caps, too! I've done these head pins up in Christmas colors, school colors, colors to match sweaters and coats. I have sold them right of my coat in the grocery store! I use the full face pins, too, but the necks ar e usually shorter and trickier to add the scarves. I have made the hats and scarves out of my felt too! Copyright 1994 Belinda Martinez Belindabmartine@smtp.stp.tec.mn.us Hi! I love the Warm Up America Program that we have at the store. (I work at Ames) You knit or crochet 7"x9" squares. Donate them to a local store and then you have an afghan party to assemble these squares. The afghans are then donated to a local charity. It is a great for using up leftover yarn. If you are interested, check out the local stores to see if they sponsor the program. If you don't have anyone in your area, you can always send the squares to me. Here is some basic knitting patterns for the squares. Diane ---------------------------- Knitted Stocking Ornament Size 2 needles, small amounts of red, white and/or green yarn. Cast on 18 stitches using the white yarn. Knit one row, purl one row, knit one row. Cut the white yarn leaving enough yarn to sew up the white part or make a loop. Using the red or the green yarn, beginning with a row of knit stitches, knit twelve rows of stockinette stitch. The twelfth row should be a purl row. 13th Row: Knit across twelve stitches. Turn the work and purl across six stitches. Work nine more rows on the center six stitches. The last row will be knit. With the right side facing you, pick up and knit five stitches down the side of the "foot". Knit the six stitches to the end of the row. Turn the work. Knit across the six stitches at the beginning of the row, the five stitches that you just picked up and knit and the six "middle" stitches. Pick up and knit five stitches on the remaining side of the "foot". Knit across the last six stitches. 28 stitches should be on the needle. Knit in garter stitch for three more rows. The last row: Knit across fourteen stitches. Turn the halves of the sock right sides together. Weave the stitches together andsew up the back of the stocking. Make a loop and hang it up. I had a request to print the pattern again. Diane Here it is: MINI KNITTED BASKET With all the interest in miniature things, I must share with you a very small and very quick knitted basket. I include a tiny knitted basket with every knitted garment that I give as a gift or sell. I knit the basket from the main yarn. I then make very tiny yarn butterflies of the contrasting yarn and put them in the basket. I include an extra button if necessary and I also cut out the washing instructions from the yarn label and include that as well. To top it off I poke two coloured finishing nails in the yarn. The nails look like knitting needles because they have a very small head and they come in varying colours of tan or brown. Recipients have hung these little baskets on the Christmas tree. So you could also hang them on the sweater wreaths as well. They look really nice filled with raw fleece that has been teased so it is fluffy and a contrasting colour of Knitting Nails. For a decoration, knit a strand of gold or silver thread with the yarn. Tiny Knitted Baskets Cast on the number of stitches to make one inch. Knit in stockinette or seed stitch or basket stitch for approximately 3 inches. This is a really breeze with a KM. Cast off leaving a long tail. Sew up both sides with mattress stitch. With a crochet hook begin a chain on one side. Crochet the chain about 2 inches, turn and do one row of single crochet. Attach the handle to the basket and fill. Keep Canada Knitting Paulette_Lane@msn.com Here is a cool hat for Easter. I hope you like it. Diane ------------------------------------------------------------- TARA'S EASTER HAT GIFT PATTERN I don't post very often, and here I am posting twice in less than 2 weeks! Last time I asked for help in finding Brunswick Rio in a discontinued ombre. Thanks to Nancy McFarlane, I have enough to make the summer top I wanted, in the same dye lot, no less! I designed and made this hat for a baby aged 6-12 months during the time it took to watch 2 TV movies, including hunting up the yarn and needles I needed. It resembles a decorated Easter egg with zig zags of color, and can be easily made larger by increasing the number of stitches. The stitch count must be a multiple of 11, plus additional stitches to make the total divisible by four. You can knit this hat back and forth with straight needles, or on short circulars and double pointed. You can knit a deep, turnback cuff or a shorter cuff and ties. Tara, my 8 month old niece, has gotten to the age of pulling her hats off as soon as they are on, so I knit the ties. Please keep in mind that children should not be left alone with anything tied onto their heads, as they can strangle themselves on the cords. This is my first attempt at writing a pattern, so let me know if you find errors. Are we still doing the Knitlist book? Who is compiling the patterns? TARA'S EASTER HAT GIFT PATTERN Materials Needles - size 4 and 6, either straight or short circulars and double pointed. If you want to do the I-cord ties, you'll need 2 size 4 double pointed needles. I prefer to knit in the round, and short circulars make this much easier until the decreased stitch count require double pointed. Yarn - 4 Easterly colors. I used pink, white, lavender and blue pastels in worsted weight Simply Soft (a soft acrylic available at Kmart and WalMart). Small amount of each (total yarn used will be less than a skein). Directions Cast on 80 stitches on size 4 needles with pink yarn. If making the hat for a boy, use the blue. Work in k2, p2 ribbing for one inch, if planning to add ties, or 3-3 1/2 inches, if planning to turn the cuff. When the ribbing is long enough, attach white and start using size 6 needles. Row 1 - Knit. Row 2 - If knitting in the round, knit. If knitting back and forth, purl. Row 3 - K2, *k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, sl1, k1, psso. Repeat to end, k1. Row 4 - If knitting in the round, knit. If knitting back and forth, purl. Attach lavender. Repeat rows 3 and 4 twice. Attach blue (or pink if making a hat for a boy). Repeat rows 3 and 4 twice. Attach pink (or blue if making a hat for a boy) Repeat rows 3 and 4 twice. Attach blue (or pink if making a hat for a boy). Repeat rows 3 and 4 once, then row 3. Next row (if knitting back and forth, substitute purls and p2tog for knits) K2, *k2tog, k7, k2tog. Repeat to end, k1. (66 stitches) Attach lavender. K2, *k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1, k1, psso. Repeat to end, k1 K2, *k2tog, k5, k2tog. Repeat to end, k1. (52 stitches) (If knitting back and forth, substitute purls and p2tog for knits.) K2, *k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, sl1, k1, psso. Repeat to end, k1 K2, *k2tog, k3, k2tog. Repeat to end, k1. (If knitting back and forth, substitute purls and p2tog for knits.) (38 stitches) If you're using the short circular needles, you're going to need to switch to size 6 double pointeds pretty quick as you decrease. Attach white. K across. K2, *k2 tog, k5. Repeat to end, k1. (If knitting back and forth, substitute purls and p2tog for knits.) (33 stitches) K across. Attach pink (or blue if making a hat for a little boy). K2, *k2tog, k3. Repeat to end, k1. (If knitting back and forth, substitute purls and p2tog for knits.) (27 stitches) K across. K2, *k2tog, k1. Repeat to end, k1. (If knitting back and forth, substitute purls and p2tog for knits.) (15 stitches) K1, *K2tog, repeat to end. (End with 8 stitches.) Thread needle with yarn tail and draw through remaining 8 stitches, drawing tight. If knit straight, sew seam. Weave in all ends. If you made a turn back cuff, you're done. Or make I-cord ties. I-cord ties (make 2) Using pink (or blue for a boy) and size 4 double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches. K3. Do not turn work, but slide stitches to the other end of the double pointed needle. Repeat, pulling the yarn tightly when knitting the first stitch of each row. This will form a nice round cord. Make the cords 18 inches long, and sew to each side of hat (on wrong side). Make a knot at the end of each cord. Enjoy! Copyright 1997 by Marilyn Windle. Feel free to use this pattern for your loved ones, but not for commercial sale without written permission.
