What a fun little project! I'm attending a wedding tomorrow and I thought I could set aside my WIPs and make a few of these gems for a gift. It looks like I'll have four. I can't tell you much about the yarn since I inherited it without a label, but it had the texture of a homespun and I'm pretty sure it was cotton. Lovely stuff, whatever it was. I just played around with the pattern and it came out really nice. Here is what I used. Materials: Cotton. US size 7 needles. Cast on 44 Work three rows of seed stitch, (k1 p1), then begin pattern. PATTERN Row 1: p1 k1 p1 k to last 2 stitches p1 k1 Row 2: k1 p1 k1 k6 *p2 k6* repeat from * to last 3 stitches p1 k1 p1 Row 3: p1 k1 p1 p6 *k2 p6* repeat from * to last 3 stitches k1 p1 k1 Rows 4 & 5: repeat rows 2 & 3 Row 6: k1 p1 k1 p to last 2 stitches k1 p1 Row 7: p1 k1 p1 k2 p2 *k6 p2* repeat from * to last 5 stitches k3 p1 k1 Row 8: k1 p1 k1 p2 k2 *p6 k2* repeat from * to last 5 stitches p3 k1 p1 Rows 9 & 10: repeat rows 7 & 8 Repeat pattern until desired length, I made mine square. End the pattern after completing row 1 or 6. Finish with 3 rows of seed stitch. It makes a really nice basket weave effect. Laura laura_green@sil.org
