Directions are given for size 2 - 4 years with size 5-7 years and adult's small, medium and large in parentheses. Materials required: are about 4 ounces of worsted weight (acrylic) 4-ply yarn. 1 pair each number 3 and 5 standard knitting needles 1 set stitch holders 1 tapestry needle Abbreviations: k (knit), p (purl), st (stitch), sl (slip), inc ( increase), dec (decrease), tog (together) Right mitten: With number 3 needle, cast on 32, (36, 40, 44, 48) sts. Work in ribbing (k1, p1) for 3, (3, 3, 3 «, 4) inches. Dec in last row 1, (2, 2, 2, 0) sts. Change to number 5 needles work in stockinette (k1 row, p1 row) 4, (4, 4, 0, 0) rows on 31, (34, 38, 42, 48) sts, ending with a purl row. Hand: (Thumb Gore) Row 1: On right side k 15, (17, 19, 21, 24) sts for back of hand, inc 1 st in next st, k1 st, inc 1 st in next st, knit remaining 13, (14, 16, 18, 21) sts for palm. Row 2: Purl even for 1 row; for medium and large, p1 row, k1 row, p1 row.
Next Row: Knit across 15, (17, 19, 21, 24) sts, inc 1 st in next st, k3 st, inc 1 st in next st, knit remaining 13, (14, 16, 18, 21) sts even. Continue to inc 1 sts on every 2nd, (2nd, 2nd, 4th, 4th) row in first and last thumb gore sts. Adding 2 more sts between the inc st on each inc row until there are 39 (42, 48, 54, 62) sts on needle. Work even 3 (3, 5, 1, 1) more rows, end with a purl row. Dividing row for thumb: Knit and place on sts on holder 15 (17, 19, 21, 24) sts (back of hand). Knit 11 (11, 13, 15, 17) sts for thumb. Place remaining 13 (14, 16, 18, 21) sts on other holder (Palm). Thumb: Cast on 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) sts and p thumb sts. Work even on these 13 (13, 15, 18, 20) sts until thumb measures 1 (1, 1 1/2, 1 1/2, 2) inches above the cast on sts or desired length. Dec 1 (1, 0, 0, 2) sts in last row, finish with a purl row. First Thumb Dec row: k1, k2tog, across row. Next row: purl across. Second Thumb Dec row: k2tog, across row, fasten off. Draw long end of yarn through remaining sts fasten securely. Sew thumb seam on wrong side withe long end of yarn. Hand: Sl sts for back of hand off holder to number 5 needles. Join Yarn, leaving a 3-inch end. Pick up and knit 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) sts on cast on thumb sts, knit sts from palm of hand off st holder to needle 30 (33, 37, 42, 48)sts. Work even until length above ribbing measures 4, (5, 6, 7, 8) inches or desired length to end of fingers. Allowing another 3/4 inch for finishing. Dec 2 (1, 1, 2, 0) sts in last row, end with a p row. First dec row for hands: k2, k2tog across row. Next row: Purl across. Second dec row: k1, k2tog across row. Next row: Purl across. Third dec row: k2tog across row. Fasten off, leaving a length of yarn to draw through sts left on needle. Stitch around to close hole Sew down side seam on wrong side. Use 3-inch end to close hole at base of thumb. Weave ends in and clip. Left Mitten: Work same as right mitten reversing shaping.
