FREE KNITTING PATTERN MRS. DONAKOWSKI'S BOW TIE SCARF by Lili Pintea-Reed (pass freely on) When I was four or five, I had a nice nieghbor lady teach me how to knit. My first effort was a shape that sort of resembled a square which we dubbed "a pot holder." However, as I got better she showed me a neat scarf pattern which sort of resembled a bow or bow tie when on... It covered the neck, didn't dangle down to get caught in sled runners or one's zippers. It was also simple and quick to make. I just made one for my son...these many years later... So thank you Mrs. Donakowski where ever you are. Your scarf pattern will pass on. Materials: 1 skein worsted weight yarn number eight (American) needles a stitch holder Directions: Caste on 20 stitches (for adult scarf add more)... Garter stitch (I said this was easy) for 24 rows (12 garter ridges)... Pick up stitich holder... Knit one stitch on to needle.... Slip next stitch on to stitch holder... Continue to do this until all stitches are on either holder or needle... Knit stitches on needle in garter stitch for ten rows (five garter ridges) ... Put them on another stitch holder... Take stitches on FIRST stitch holder and knit them in garter stitch for ten rows ....same as above...You now have two sections of ten stitches each. Recombine them by knitting one stitch off needle... then one off stitch holder until all twenty are back on one needle... Knit in garter stitch to make this section fit around child's neck... Then knit one and slip one stitch on to holder just like above... Garter stitches on needle for ten rows. Garter stitches on holder for ten rows and recombine as above... Knit all 20 stitches foe 24 rows (12 garter ridges) and bind off.... To wear tuck one end through the slit you created by slipping the stitches... It will look like a bow or bow tie... Keeps the child's neck warm...without long dangling ends to get caught in things...and uses up yarn left overs... Make several for friends, family and a few for holiday charity bags...
